European Court of Auditors AI Traineeship in Luxembourg: Paid Six Months for EU Graduates
The European Court of Auditors is offering AI traineeships at its Luxembourg office. The six-month traineeship pays €2,500 a month and is open to recent graduates and doctoral students in AI, computer science, data science, IT, or a similar field. Trainees work on real AI projects supporting the audit work of an EU institution, supervised by experienced staff.
One condition decides everything, so read it first. This traineeship is open only to nationals of an EU member state, with no exception route. You must also never have worked for an EU institution, body, or agency in any capacity, including as a trainee.

Check yourself first: are you eligible?
EU traineeship calls are strict: any application that fails a single condition is excluded before anything else is considered. Check this list honestly before you spend time on documents.
- You are a national of an EU member state.
- You hold a degree from studies of three years or more, or you are currently doing a doctorate in AI, computer science, data science, IT, or a similar field.
- Your English is at least C1 in understanding, speaking, and writing, plus very good knowledge of one official EU language and satisfactory knowledge of a second.
- You have never been a trainee or employee at any EU institution, body, or agency.
- You can show at least one AI-relevant skill, such as generative AI, Python or R, or AI tools.
You should not apply if you are not an EU national, even if you live or study in the EU, or if you have already done a traineeship at an EU institution, even an unpaid one. Do not apply if your English is below C1, since English is the working language for AI projects. An application that fails a hard rule is excluded at the eligibility check.
What you will actually work on
Trainees join the ECA’s DATA team and the Directorate for Information Technology, Workplace and Innovation, working with auditors on pre-set AI projects. The work is practical: studying how AI can improve audit tasks such as summarising documents, extracting information from large datasets, and analysing open-text survey answers. You may also design AI agents for audit needs, clean datasets, or test AI tool accuracy.
Two examples show the flavour of the work: preparing internal audit-methodology information to build an interactive chatbot, and automating steps that today need a human, such as isolating information from unstructured invoices. Each trainee has a staff mentor throughout the six months.
What the €2,500 monthly allowance means in practice
The allowance is a fixed €2,500 a month, not a salary, with one exception. If you already receive an allowance from another entity, such as a university, the ECA pays only the difference, up to €2,500. Check this before you apply, so the final amount holds no surprises.
Plan your budget around the full six months. Renewal for up to six more months is possible if the service requires it, but it is not a promise. For comparison, see the Max Planck internship in computer science in Germany and the WIPO internship programme in Geneva, which are different programmes with their own rules.
How to apply by email
Unlike the ECA’s standard traineeships, which use an online form, the AI traineeship application goes by email. Send it to ECA-AI-Traineeship@eca.europa.eu by 30 November, midnight Luxembourg time. Late applications are rejected, so send yours before the final evening. It must be in English or French and contain a cover letter, a Europass CV, and a recommendation letter.
Your CV matters more than usual, because the committee judges applications on the documents alone and may ask for evidence for anything you claim. State language levels on the Europass framework scale, and be honest about English, since C1 is the minimum. Give concrete examples of AI skills, not buzzwords, and ask a recommender who has seen your technical work.
What happens after you apply
After the deadline, the selection committee first checks every application against the eligibility criteria, and anyone who fails a condition is excluded. Eligible files are then examined, and a shortlist is drawn up based on level of studies, relevance of academic background, motivation, language skills, examples of AI-specific skills, and other relevant qualifications. Shortlisted applicants are invited to an interview, and offers then depend on budget availability, so shortlisting alone does not guarantee a place.
Frequently asked questions
Q: Do I need to be an EU national to apply?
A: Yes. You must be a national of an EU member state, with no exception route.

A: No. Any past traineeship, paid or unpaid, at an EU institution, body, or agency excludes you, as does past employment there.
Q: Do I need a completed degree, or can doctoral students apply?
A: Either works: a diploma from studies of three years or more, or current doctoral studies in a relevant field.
Q: Is the traineeship paid?
A: Yes, €2,500 a month, or only the difference up to €2,500 if you already receive another allowance.
Q: Can the six months be extended?
A: It can be renewed for up to six more months if the service requires it, but that is not guaranteed.
Q: How do I submit my application?
A: By email to ECA-AI-Traineeship@eca.europa.eu, in English or French, with a Europass CV, a cover letter, and a recommendation letter, by 30 November, midnight Luxembourg time. The application button above leads to the official traineeships page, where the email route is published.
